O'Neil she was in her high school years when she took part in the auditions, auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement for her performance. O'Neil was given high marks by the jury. She suffered major defeats in the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed on the third row, and then in the bottom two. The judges were surprised by her performance, and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known, such as Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she was never in the lower three ever again. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner of this year's Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September finals in 2005. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
